Duties
The successful candidate will work as a member of the Resource Conservation team in Visitor Safety, reporting to the Visitor Safety Supervisor. You will be called upon to participate in all technical and non-technical ground search and rescue, swift-water, and avalanche related emergency responses as well as cross-functional wildlife co-existence response activities. You will work directly under senior public Avalanche Forecasters in the collection of field observations and snowpack data in the publication of the daily public avalanche forecast. You will participate in Highways Avalanche Control operations, including all mitigation measures like deployment of explosives. You will be asked to participate in internal and professional development training and may assist in the delivery of Visitor Safety training to other park staff and/or departments. You may be asked to participate in technical responses to significant occurrences in other field units within the Mountain National parks.

EDUCATION

Completion of secondary school or Public Service Commission approved alternative.
Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

Varied experience in any human-powered adventures; especially in Jasper National Park.
Strong skiing ability, especially in back-country touring using touring/split-board equipment.
Strong computer skills, especially using Microsoft tools, databases and web based applications.
Understanding in the use of topographical maps, mapping applications, and geo-browser satellite imagery software (eg. Google Earth).
Experience and confidence in an outdoor leadership role.
Experience participating in a dynamic work environment requiring a high level of fitness.

The following qualifications are not essential to the job, but would be an asset in carrying out the duties of the position. They may be used in screening, assessment or determining right fit for this selection process.

Current 80-hour Advance Wilderness First-Aid or equivalent.
Canadian Avalanche Association, Avalanche Operations Level 1, 2.
Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, Member in good standing.
Previous or current Parks Canada job experience.

Reliability Status security clearance.
Maintenance of a valid Driver's License.
Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks.
Ability to travel over varied and difficult terrain on foot/skis, carrying a 15kg backpack.
Ability to drag 50kg weight over gravel for 50m.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment.
Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation.
Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required.
Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required.
