Heavy Duty Mechanic / Fleet Technician – Jasper, AB

Full-Time, Permanent/Continuous | Municipal Government
$44.68–$48.42/hour | 40 hours/week | Monday–Friday

Join a municipal operations team responsible for keeping essential fleet vehicles and heavy equipment safe, reliable, and ready for year-round service.

This position is ideal for an experienced Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician / Heavy Duty Mechanic who enjoys varied fleet work, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and supporting critical municipal operations.

Housing opportunity: A one-bedroom suite may be available at below-market rent, with potential additional subsidy at the Municipality’s discretion.

About the Position:

The Fleet Technician is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of the municipality's heavy equipment and fleet vehicles to ensure safe and reliable operation.

This includes diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues, performing preventative maintenance, and supporting seasonal operations such as snow removal and road maintenance.

The role also involves using computer systems and diagnostic software to track maintenance records, order parts, and support efficient fleet management. Strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and commitment to safety and public service are essential.

What You’ll Do:

Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair small engines and light-, medium-, and heavy-duty fleet vehicles, including emergency and municipal service units.
Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and related systems.
Use diagnostic software, technical manuals, testing equipment, and computerized maintenance systems to troubleshoot equipment.
Ensure vehicles and equipment meet applicable safety, inspection, and regulatory requirements.
Maintain accurate service, inspection, maintenance, parts, and fleet records.
Coordinate vehicle registrations, inspections, and Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program requirements.
Order, receive, track, and maintain inventory of parts, materials, and supplies.
Support seasonal operations, including snow removal and road-maintenance equipment.
Provide technical guidance and training to fleet operators and registered apprentices.
Support and provide direction to the Municipal Fleet Mechanic as required.
Promote safe work practices and maintain clear communication with management and operations staff.
Required Qualifications:

Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician certification with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, including preventative and corrective maintenance of equipment and light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles.
Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) Technician certification
Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air Brake endorsement.
WHMIS certification
First Aid and CPR certification
Ability to safely lift up to 35 kg
Strong diagnostic, troubleshooting, and mechanical skills
Assets:

Class 1 Driver’s Licence,
Welding/fabrication experience,
Forklift certification,
Experience with electric or hybrid vehicles,
Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office, diagnostic software, and Alberta Transportation online systems are considered assets.
