 ABOUT THE POSITION 

The Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of the Municipality’s heavy equipment and fleet vehicles to ensure safe and reliable operation. This includes diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues, performing preventative maintenance, and supporting seasonal operations such as snow and road maintenance. The role also involves using computer systems and diagnostic software to track maintenance records, order parts, and support efficient fleet management. Strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and commitment to safety and public service are essential. 

Work performed:  

 •Fleet Maintenance and Repair 

o Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on small engines, light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, including emergency service units. 

o Perform inspections, diagnostics, and repairs to ensure equipment and vehicles meet municipal standards and regulatory requirements. 

• Regulatory Compliance and Safety 

o Ensure compliance with the Alberta Traffic Act and the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Act, Regulations, and Code. 

o Adhere to strict registration and renewal dates for vehicles and equipment in the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program. 

• Technical Operations and Diagnostics 

o Utilize technical manuals, diagnostic software, and test equipment to identify and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues. 

• Inventory and Resource Management 

o Procure, receive, and track parts and materials in accordance with municipal purchasing and accounting procedures. 

o Maintain an organized and up-to-date inventory of parts, supplies, and components. 

• Staff Supervision and Support 

o Educate staff on fleet operation and maintenance procedures 

o Ensure all operators are aware of roles and responsibilities related to the Municipality’s fleet 

o Train and supervise registered apprentices 

o Provide guidance and oversight to the Municipal Fleet Mechanic 

o Monitor staff performance to ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with established training, procedures, and standards. 

o Keep management informed through clear, timely, and relevant communication, including regular email updates. 

o Monitor and support staff to maintain an appropriate level of productivity, ensuring that performance meets operational expectations.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Your resume and cover letter must clearly describe how you meet the following qualifications:

 Required 

• Accredited Heavy Equipment Technician Journeyperson Certification with a minimum of 2 years of experience. Including preventative and corrective maintenance of small engines, equipment, light-medium-heavy duty vehicles. 

• Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) Technician. 

• Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certification. 

• First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification. 

• Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Brakes Endorsement. 

 Preferred 

• Class 1 Driver’s License. 

• Welding and fabrication experience. 

• Certified training in forklift operation. 

• Proficiency with computers and software, including Microsoft Office suite and Alberta Transportation online services. 

• Experience working on electric or hybrid vehicles is considered an asset. 

• Ability to safely lift to 35 kilograms.
