Purpose

Reporting to the Sr Manager, Facilities & Fleet, the Operations Mechanical Lead is an integral team member of the Rocky Mountaineer Operations and Mechanical team. The Operations Mechanical Lead will be mainly responsible for the safety and security of the rail site and train maintenance where the RM train will be serviced including managing external contractors.

As a Rocky Mountaineer team member, you will be working alongside a diverse group of people who are committed to working together, supporting our values, and ensuring we are always on brand as a world class luxury rail tour company.

This position is deemed Safety Critical and pre-employment testing will be required. Final candidates must successfully pass a safety critical medical exam and will undergo medical monitoring as prescribed by Transport Canada. This position requires you to periodically access an active railway area where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property, or the environment.

Compensation

The base salary offered for this role is $39.49 per hour.

Key Areas of Accountability

Support train movements of passenger rail equipment on site when required
Provide leadership to workplace safety and security by role modeling appropriate behavior and enforcing safety rules
Leads maintenance and servicing of equipment
Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair rail car components interior and exterior
Operate handbrakes, couple air hoses, disconnect/connect HEP cables and water lines, operate track switches/derails where required
Provide timely, accurate reporting to team members and partners
Provide on job coaching and guidance to other team members and contractors
Safety

Comply with Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR), General Operating Instructions (GOI), Federal Railroad Association (FRA), and all other safety policies, procedures, and rules
Identify, protect, and report safety hazards to management and OH&S Committee
Meet or exceed safety and security requirements
Maintain basic first aid level provided by Rocky Mountaineer
Operations

Support the successful execution of the Operating Plan
Support safe movement of rail equipment
Support operational and equipment availability requirements
Support 5S Lean methodology to seek continuous improvement efficiencies
Mechanical

Read, understand, and interpret schematics, manuals and other instructions pertaining to equipment
Mechanical aptitude and the ability to operate equipment and hand tools
Train for the use of equipment and hand tools
Ensure completion of work orders maintaining brand standards, working collaboratively with team members and contractors
Execute mechanical and reliability requirements
Qualifications

Education, Certification, Licenses

High School Diploma
Mechanical experience is an asset
Relevant Red Seal Trade Qualification is an asset
First Aid Level 1 Certification is an asset
Valid Driver’s License
Qualification and/or proven knowledge in safe heavy equipment operations such as forklifts, cranes, etc.
Qualification and/or proven knowledge in safe small hand tool handling such as grinders, drills, etc.
Previous Qualification under CROR Operating Rules is an asset
Experience/Skills

Railroad experience is required
Strong coordination and organizational skills
High attention to detail with a desire to maintain brand standards
Able to take personal accountability, be adaptable, and be a problem solver
Good communication and leadership skills
Able to work cross-functionally
Work Environment

May require occasional travel
Physical demands may require lifting to 80 lbs. on occasion
Rail industrial site that requires walking and sitting throughout the day
24/7 operation that may require varied work schedules
Indoor/outdoor working environment
