Duties
The primary responsibility of this position is to deliver caribou husbandry activities, provide daily monitoring, and support preventative health care for caribou residing in the Caribou Conservation Breeding Centre. The position will feed, clean pens and, provide general and daily care for captive caribou under the direction of the Breeding Centre Manager, including assisting with monitoring animal health and with handling caribou for medical treatments. The position will also monitor caribou during critical times such as calving and breeding. The position will assist in conducting, and applying monitoring and research protocols and procedures, including collection of biological samples as directed by the Breeding Centre Manager and/or the Caribou Health Technologist.

As required, the position will also assist the Caribou Health Technologist preparing caribou for surgery and other medical procedures, and necropsy as directed by the program veterinarian; help maintain laboratory, necropsy rooms, and specialized equipment; assist with post-mortem examinations; and collect animal tissues for analysis. The position will maintain detailed records of animal observations and daily monitoring; record data during handling procedures and perform data entry and simple analysis as required.

The successful candidate will be required to work onsite at the Caribou Conservation Breeding Centre. Due to the demands of caring for live animals, these EG-03 positions will not be available to assist with emergency response programs.

Education:
Graduation from a recognized post-secondary program in Biology, Wildlife or Agriculture (livestock) or an acceptable mix of academic and work experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Minimum 2-years of large mammal husbandry, daily care, and/or handling experience. This experience can come from domestic farm or accredited zoological institution, in specialized livestock (cervid) programming, or in captive or free-range wildlife programming relevant to the position;
Experience supporting quantitative and qualitative health assessments of wildlife;
Experience in collecting wildlife monitoring data in laboratory or in the field to support analyses, for publication in scientific manuscripts and/or reports.

Additional (Asset) Experience:
Experience in operating farm equipment (e.g., tractor and implements, UTV);
Experience working with laboratory equipment (e.g., microscope, fume hood, centrifuge);
Experience supporting surgical procedures and/or supporting necropsies on large mammals (preferably ungulate and/or wildlife);
Experience operating a hydraulic squeeze for large mammals and using specialized animal handling systems;
Experience in computer-based animal records/inventory;
Experience in managing native and non-native vegetation relevant to this position.

Conditions of employment
Reliability Status security clearance - All employees of the Federal Government are required to meet Reliability Status; details of the screening process and applications will be provided at the time of interviews.

CAZWV Chemical Immobilization Certification or obtain within 6 months of hire;
Possession and maintenance of a valid class 5 driver's license (Class L, N or other graduated licenses will not be accepted);
Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks.
